With a market share of 11%, Symrise is one of the world’s biggest suppliers of fragrances, flavourings and cosmetic base materials. Sustainability is at the heart of everything it does and in 2019, it was awarded Germany’s most sustainable large corporation for the second time.
Vanilla – both natural and synthetic – is one of Symrise’s core competencies, and it is the only global player with a fully backward integrated supply chain and on-the-ground presence in Madagascar.
This was a multi-discipline project. I led on the strategy, messaging, tone of voice, copywriting and creative oversight.
Our challenge was to bring the magic of vanilla and the diversity of Madagascar to life through digital content. Sustainability and Symrise's unique backwardly integrated supply chain needed to be at the heart of the content, but this is a complex story to tell.
Working from limited printed material and some old film footage, we began to develop a narrative structure for a new digital experience for Symrise Vanilla that would take users on a journey from the jungles of Madagascar to the development labs of Germany.
Combining our own research with an intensive weeks' filming, interviewing and researching with Symrise teams in Germany (including sustainability directors, perfumers, flavourists, marketing managers and more), the creative output was a content-led, mixed-media platform that takes users on a journey into the heart of Syrmise Vanilla.
